Dr. Barrick always loved animals growing up. However, it wasn’t until her family adopted a rescue dog with severe anxiety that she realized her passion lied within strengthening the human-animal bond. Dr. Barrick completed her bachelor’s degree in animal science from Iowa State University, followed by her doctor of veterinary medicine at Ross University. During vet school, she volunteered with several outreach programs and developed a passion for animal welfare, preventative medicine and soft tissue surgery.
Dr. Barrick resides on the northside of Indianapolis with her husband Nick and their two pets, a dog (Sophie) and cat (Buttercup). In her free time, she enjoys tailgating Iowa State football games, golfing, hiking, and playing pickleball.
My name is Dr. Lexie Barrick. I'm an associate veterinarian here at Monon Animal Hospital!
What inspired you to become a veterinarian?
I think a lot of kids growing up have this dream and idea of being a veterinarian, playing with puppies and kittens every day. I mean, that sounds like a pretty great career, right? I'm sure that's probably how it started a little bit. Then, going into middle school, high school, and college, I realized that I really liked science, and I liked knowing how things worked and the body and understanding all these mysteries of the body that can be explained.
How did you decide that veterinary medicine was the right field for you?
I think that putting together that love and compassion for animals, as well as this love of science and wanting to understand how things work and how we can improve upon it, putting those together really made sense for me in the field of veterinary medicine.
What do you love about your role as a veterinarian?
I love being able to advocate for all these animals that can't necessarily speak for themselves. Owners are so compassionate and empathetic towards their pets, and they want to do what's best for them, but they don't always necessarily know what that is. So, that's where we come in as veterinarians.
