Learning More About Cat Spays and Neuters at Monon Animal Hospital
At what age should I have my cat spayed or neutered?
There is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to the age of spaying or neutering your cat. However, often for these guys, we will recommend a little bit earlier. So, around 5 to 6 months of age would be appropriate.
What are the benefits of spaying or neutering my cat?
The biggest benefits of spaying and neutering we see are decreasing unwanted behaviors such as urine marking outside the litter box and inner cat aggression. Additionally, it decreases or completely eliminates the risk of certain cancers such as mammary or breast cancer, testicular cancers, and prostate diseases.
Are there any risks associated with a cat spay or neuter?
The biggest risks we see with spaying and neutering often come from anesthesia. As with any anesthetic procedure, we will cater specifically towards your cat. We will do pre-op blood work and examinations to ensure there are no illnesses or concerns moving forward, providing the best and safest experience for you and your animal.
How should I prepare my cat for a spay or neuter procedure?
Preparing your cat for a spay or neuter involves a pre-op examination to ensure there is no underlying illness and that they are a healthy and strong candidate for surgery. We’ll perform pre-op blood work to check organ function, white cell count, and red cell count. On the morning of the procedure, we ask you to drop your pet off without feeding them breakfast to reduce the risks of anesthetic complications such as aspiration pneumonia.
What's the typical recovery time after a spay or neuter for a cat?
Recovery time for a cat after a spay or neuter is relatively quick. These guys often bounce back within a week to 10 days. During that time, we ask you to keep them quiet and rested. In some cases, we'll send you home with an e-collar or an Elizabethan collar to prevent them from licking their incision and causing infection or wounds.
What should I do if I notice any complications after my cat's surgery?
If you notice any complications such as redness, swelling, discharge, or bleeding after the procedure, please contact us or your veterinarian to get the medical assistance required.
